May is Asthma Awareness Month World Asthma Day- May 6th All this month we are offering free asthma
screening: see below for available times – In the U.S. alone, as estimated 20 million Americans, including more than 6 million children, suffer from asthma. Asthma is the most common serious chronic disease of childhood and the #1 cause for school absenteeism among children.
May is Asthma Awareness Month. According to the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), every day in America: Ø 40,000 people miss school or work due to asthma Ø 30,000 people have an asthma episode Ø 5,000 people visit the emergency room due to asthma Ø 1,000 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma Ø 11 people die from asthma
World Asthma Day 2008, which is organized & sponsored by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) will be held on May 6, 2008. The theme for World Asthma Day 2008 is “You Can Control Your Asthma”.
Asthma control is the goal of treatment. Signs that asthma is not well controlled include any of the following:
Ø Use of a “relief” inhaler 2 or more times in one week Ø 2 or more night time awakenings in 1 month due to asthma symptoms Ø Asthma symptoms interfere with normal activity Ø Peak flow less than 80% of predicted/personal best Ø Use of oral steroids 2 or more times per year for asthma symptoms Ø Emergency room, urgent care center or urgent physician’s office visits for asthma.
The Allergy & Asthma Institute of SE Michigan, located at 7010 Pontiac Trail in West Bloomfield, will offer free asthma screenings on selected days and times during the month of May. |
